BABOOM!!! Yeah, you know what we mean.

There's nothing prettier than when you throw the ball down the lane, it hits a perfect pocket and you see 10 pins go flying through the air with a satisfying CRACK!! If you don't know what I'm talking about, this section is for you. First of all, let's get the formalities taken care of. PIN ACTION is when you hit the pins and they move into each other, knocking them down. Most avid bowlers have had experience with pin action and some, like my brother, have actually found a way to miraculously will the pins into taking care of themselves. Quite annoying if you ask me, but I digress. Where was I? Oh yeah, pin action. There are a couple of reasons why you won't the get pin action you think you deserve. From my experience, there are two main reasons. Either you're not bowling through the ball, or your ball is too light.
Now for those of you who read that and all you understood was "Blah Blah Blah the ball," I'll explain. 'Bowling through' the ball is what every bowler should be doing when they toss the round piece of plastic down the lanes. Bowling through the ball will cause you to get more hook, control, and for lack of better terms: OOOMPH! The best way to achieve these very desirable effects, and yes, I'll have pictures, is to slowly go through your approach, except instead of letting go of the ball, watch your hand. If your palm is over the ball, you are NOT effectively bowling through the ball. If your hand is behind the ball (Behind meaning on the side of the ball closest to your body and away from the pins) then you ARE effectively bowling through.
Now for the other reason you may not be getting the pin action you desire and from my wealth (wealth behind a self-chosen word) of knowledge the most common reason behind your pin action-less woes, your ball is too light. I know this may sound like an easy fix but it may not be as simple as quantum mechanics. (I know, too simple, right?) There is a simple way to test your ball weight. What you do is you hold your ball like you were starting your approach. Don't move, don't go forward, what you do is you drop your ball by your side, not using your arm strength at all, let the ball do all of the work. If your ball forces your arm to swing all the way backwards, forward past your legs and higher that your arm length, you have a sufficiently weighted ball. If it doesn't come back that far, your ball is too light and you should head to your nearest pro shop. (FYI: I'm not partnered with any pro shops and I get no money from you buying more stuff for this game of ours.)
So hopefully that answers your questions of why you, should we say, no get big boom. Enjoy!!
